I recently saw a TED talk by Simon Sinek, where he described the Golden Circle. The outside of the circle is the WHAT question–what you do or what you’re selling. The next circle inward is the HOW question. This is how you do the WHAT or what makes you different than the competition. The last circle (the inner circle) is the WHY. This is WHY you do what you do. It speaks to your beliefs and values that drive the whole system. It’s what gets you up in the morning and is the engine behind what you’re creating. Most people and companies begin with the WHAT, describing what they make or do and then go to the HOW. Sinek’s theory is that all successful companies and leaders do the opposite. They begin with the WHY and move outward. Apple’s WHY, for example, is in everything we do we challenge the status quo. Their HOW is we make elegant user-friendly computers and devices. Then they answer the WHAT question: we sell good dependable computers. I think you get the gist.
I thought it might be helpful for you to understand my Golden Circle.
